Watches and Cinema
Watches have been a full-fledged hero of famous «Bondiana» for a long and saved their owners lives more than once. However, usual characters of less heroic films wear real watches, which we often do not pay attention to.
All are accustomed to the fact that TAG Heuer watches appear mostly in films on sports theme, especially race: for example, «Le Mans» with Steve McQueen. However, one also can see TAG Heuer Kirium model in a horror film «Bone Daddy» on a hand of chief investigator in Ed O'Neill's performance.
However, the movie about military pilots - «Broken Arrow» (1996) has no surprises: John Travolta, an actor and a certified pilot, wears his favorite Breitling Aerospace while acting. The movie «Daylight» with Sylvester Stallone in the title role offers different close-ups of watches. Stallone himself (a former fireman who rescues people from engulfed tunnel in New York) wears Luminor Panerai in this film. Other characters' hands are decorated with TAG Heuer, Seiko, Casio and Bulova. It is interesting to trace an evolution of watches in «Die Hard» trilogy. In the first film you can only notice Rolex on Holly's wrist, a wife of Bruce Willis hero. In the second film, almost all heroes, both terrorists, and intelligencers check time using TAG Heuer chronographs. And, finally, in the last «Die Hard» Willis himself wears Breitling Chronomat Longitude.
Officine Panerai - favorite watch of brave heroes. Same Arnold Schwarzenegger wore Luminor Panerai Marina in the movie «Eraser». Moreover, a watch close-up appeared during initial titles. In 1993, in «Enough» blockbuster (a movie about barmy clerk), Michael Douglas's character wore Lorus watch, a subsidiary brand of Seiko. And in the movie "The Game" by David Fincher, same Michael Douglas wears gold Cartier Tank with side second hand at around «6 hours», and an inscription on back cover «In honor of your birthday, your father's watch from your mother with love». Cartier Tank appeared in movies about high society. One of the most memorable appearances on screen - on Audrey Hepburn's wrist in an adventurous movie of 1966, «How to steal a million». Everyone remembers Alistair MacLean's bestseller «Force 10 from Navarone» and a hit on it, shot in 1978. But few know that heroes of Harrison Ford and Robert Shaw wore Hamilton model. What does a dispassionate oceanologist performed by Richard Dreyfuss take with him to hunt for a giant shark in the movie «Jaws»? Rolex Submariner. In a movie «Jerry Maguire» Tom Cruise's character wears a very fashionable at the time model TAG Heuer S / el Chronograph.
Especially for the movie «Men in Black» they produced replicas of classic Hamilton Ventura models with black face. Producer decided that asymmetrical bodies are best combined with mysterious appearance of agents Kay and Jay. Raymond Weil watches also can be seen in movies, though in rather unusual ones: in a political thriller «Murder in the White House» Alan Alda's character (known on «MESH» series) wears Raymond Weil Parsifal, in addition, the premiere of sports Model Raymond Weil W1 took place in this movie. In a comedy «Planes, Trains & Automobiles» watch also plays not the minor role. Heroes of Steve Martin and John Candy attempt to exchange watch for a night in a motel: Martin offers Piaget, and Candy - Casio. The latter has to sleep in the yard. In a classic Alfred Hitchcock's thriller «Rear window» (1954), James Stewart's character oversees neighbors wearing Tissot watch with steel bracelet. Positive colonel in Kirk Douglas's performance in a political thriller «Seven Days in May» wears the most fashionable model of 1964 in the U.S. - Bulova Accutron Astronaut. A Nazi researcher from the movie «Seven Years in Tibet» performed by Brad Pitt goes to Dalai Lama with gold Omega chronograph. I wonder which watch would you take to a journey to another planet. Kurt Russell in «Star Gate» movie took Breitling Sirius. The movie «The Thomas Crown Affair» causes some bewilderment: Pierce Brosnan's character wears of golden Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duo model, which is easy to find in a close-up. However, you can see dial has no logos or labels.
And finally, a recipe for success from Hollywood: in «Wall Street» movie, Charlie Sheen's character firstly crosses the threshold of a brokerage firm wearing Lorus. And leaves it wearing Cartier. Published: 05/05/2009 All articles |
